Houston Sauce Pit is the city’s newest barbecue joint, but it isn’t like any of the rest of the smoked meat temples in town. Instead of filling its pits with briskets and pork butts, this smoky roving truck will serve a menu of barbecue dishes that’s 100% vegan.
A project of Houston Sauce Co.’s Jarrett Milton and Courtney Lindsey, Houston Sauce Pit made its debut at East End bar Li’l Danny Speedo’s Go Fly A Kite Lounge over the weekend. According to Milton and Lindsey, the new truck will rove across the city with a full menu of meatless barbecue dishes that even devoted carnivores can appreciate. “We took some of our favorite barbecue menu items and made them into something even more spectacular than what we were already serving,” Milton tells Eater.
Houston Sauce Pit’s menu boasts dishes like chopped “veef” sandwiches, smoked chicken “wings” and mac and cheese loaded down with vegan brisket. One of its marquee options is the smoked link loaded mash, a pile of mashed potatoes that’s spiked with all the traditional baked potato flavors and then topped with smoked Beyond Meat sausage links, barbecue sauce, and green onions. On the side, find potato salad, brussels sprouts with “bacon” and smoked elote.
Vegans and vegan-curious folks can keep up with Houston Sauce Pit via Instagram, where Milton and Lindsey will keep fans updated on where to find the Houston Sauce Pit truck. On Thursday, January 16, they’ll head back to Li’l Danny Speedo’s, then park in front of the Savoy Urban Beer Garden that’s currently in the works on Emancipation on Saturday, January 18.
