Jars of a Raleigh-made dry hot sauce have been recalled over allergy concerns that could be life-threatening.

Benny T’s Vesta, a line of dry hot sauces, issued a voluntary recall on Jan. 8 over labels that omitted wheat as a potential allergen. The hot sauces include breadcrumbs and list “enriched flour” as an ingredient but didn’t include wheat as an allergen on their labels.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning this week and characterized Benny T’s response as a “voluntary recall.” It advised people with wheat allergies or intolerances that the product could be harmful.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the FDA said in a recall notice.

No illnesses associated with the hot sauces have been reported, the FDA said.

In a company statement, Benny T’s Vesta said its dry hot sauces are made with dried chilies, onions and breadcrumbs and that it hasn’t changed its ingredient list since its founding 15 years ago.

“Up until recently we were not aware, nor told by inspectors, that wheat as an allergen was required to be listed on our packaging,” Benny T’s Vesta said in a statement. “Once we were made aware of the issue in late December 2023, we have worked closely with state and federal officials to correct the label.”

The FDA said the impacted products and lot numbers include:

  • Benny T’s Vesta Ghost, Lot no. 7 94571 99498 0, expiration date Dec. 2024
  • Benny T’s Vesta Hot, Lot no. 7 94571 99497 3, expiration date Dec. 2024
  • Benny T’s Vesta Reaper, Lot no. 7 94571 99490 4, expiration date Dec. 2024
  • Benny T’s Vesta Scorpion, Lot no. 7 94571 99491 1, expiration date Dec. 2024
  • Benny T’s Vesta Very Hot, Lot no. 7 94571 99499 7, expiration date Dec. 2024.

According to its website, Benny T’s Vesta is marketed nationally online and in food stores, including Whole Foods.

Benny T’s Vesta said the recall is driven by its labeling and that labels for future products have been corrected. Sales have been suspended online and in stores until the new labels are issued.

“We completely agree it’s pivotal for any consumer to be aware of the risks in all products, and we apologize for not including it earlier had we known,” Benny T’s said in a statement.

The FDA advised consumers to not use the dry hot sauce and to throw the jars away. In a company statement Benny T’s Vesta suggested consumers without wheat allergies could use the product.

“Our products are completely safe to consume if you do not have a wheat allergy,” the company said in a statement.

It said it would replace jars of hot sauce with new jars bearing the new labels with proof of purchase.

The FDA directed concerns and questions to Benny T’s Vesta owner Chris Tuorto, who can be reached 8 am. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday at 919-656-7688.
