The Cincinnati football freshman who made memorable interceptions last season was honored this week.
Bearcats' cornerback Ahmad 'Sauce' Gardner was named to the 2019 Football Writers Association of America-Shaun Alexander Freshman All-America Team presented by Stand Together, the FWAA announced Monday.
Gardner is just UC’s second honoree on the FWAA freshman team, joining former OL Parker Ehinger, who earned the accolade in 2012.
Gardner showed up in 2019 when UC most needed plays.
He had interceptions returned for a touchdown against both UCF and at ECU, becoming the fifth UC player to have more than one pick-6 in the same season and first since now-UC assistant Mike Mickens in 2007.
Gardner started the final six games of the season and finished with 31 tackles and 11 passes defended. According to Pro Football Focus, Gardner ranked as the No. 6 overall cornerback with a 90.0 coverage grade, allowing no touchdowns and only a 39.4 passer rating against him.
PFF also named him a third-team All-America selection and an All-Freshman team honoree.
