Um, Kim Kardashian Just Invested in My Favorite Hot Sauce? - Food & Wine

I have a bit of a hot sauce obsession. Whether I’m watching celebrities sweat it out on “Hot Ones” or tuning in as editors debate which bottles deserve the front-row spot in your pantry, the spicy condiment is always a hot topic. If you prefer a mild kick of jalapeños or the scorching heat of ghost peppers, you probably have a strong opinion about why your bottle(s) of choice are ranked the way they are.

When it comes to my own hot sauce preferences, it depends on the dish. For breakfast foods — eggs, hash browns, avocado toast — Cholula is my go-to. If I want to spice up ramen or rice, Sriracha is my pick. When looking for something to toss wings in or dash over popcorn, I always reach for Zabs (apologies to my friends who swear Frank’s RedHot is the only choice for a good wing sauce). And, as a creature of habit, I’ve never really strayed from this sauce triangle — until I tried Truff Hotter Hot Sauce.

The blood-red bottle mysteriously found its way into my apartment after a dinner party. And as someone who enjoys the taste of truffles but also thinks the craze around the rare fungi could mellow a bit, I was skeptical as I drizzled it onto a bowl of roasted vegetables and rice the next day. The hot sauce, which is filled with truffles, made me anticipate an overly saturated truffle flavor — the rich and fragrant fungus can easily overpower a dish if you’re not careful — but instead, I enjoyed a balanced combination of jalapeño, habanero, and red pepper spices with the umami punch of black truffle. I wanted to roll my eyes at the nearly $20 bottle of sauce, and really cement my skepticism, but I couldn’t. Truff’s Hotter Hot Sauce officially shattered my aforementioned sauce pyramid and became one of my favorites.

Now that the sauce is settled into my pantry, I’ve been using it on everything. It competes with Cholula when I’m looking for something to add to my eggs (sunny side up, of course), gets drizzled over pastas and pizza, and easily mixes with mayo and a mixture of spices for a delicious chicken or tuna salad.

But here’s where it gets better: Kim Kardashian’s and Jay Sammons’ private equity firm, SKKY Partners announced last month it was investing in the sauce. It is the firm’s first official investment, formally dipping their hands into the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) food space. 

This investment choice shouldn’t surprise me — the Kardashians and Jenners already have a stake in beauty, skincare, fashion, liquor, and more — but I wouldn’t have predicted hot sauce to be the first. But, then again, maybe there’s a reason Kardashian gave a lecture at Harvard Business School and is strengthening her reputation as a growing business titan, and I am not.

If you’re unfamiliar with Truff’s hot sauces, here’s the breakdown: You can buy Original, White Hot, Hotter Hot, and White Hotter Hot. The white bottles contain white truffles and the other two use black truffles. If you can’t decide which to try, think of how strong of a truffle flavor you prefer. If you’re a fan of a pungent, earthy, garlicky, and faintly Parmesan flavor, white truffles are for you. If you’d rather opt for a milder flavor that’s still earthy and robust, you’ll enjoy a black truffle. The fungi-obsessed brand dabbles in truffle oil, pasta sauce, mayo, and salt, too, and I’d be lying if I said I don’t have my eye on a bottle of the Spicy Marinara Sauce and the Spicy Truff Mayo. Imagine how much better my chicken salad sandwiches will be with spicy truffle-infused mayonnaise holding it together.  

So, whether you’re looking for a new addition to your sauce collection, are curious if the Kardashian-backed condiments are actually worth the hype, now’s your moment.
