Everybody goes to Milo’s - or maybe, Milo’s will come to you.
The popular Birmingham-based burger chain has been quietly road testing its “Burger Bus” this month, a full-service food truck with plans to bring its menu to everything from corporate events to parties to possible areas of expansion.
The bus is a food truck outfitted to take orders and deliver burgers, fries, chicken tenders and pies, as well as the chain’s famous tea, to hungry customers.
Billy Misso was one of those who lined up Thursday to order. The bus was stationed in the parking lot of a former pharmacy on Crosshaven Drive in Cahaba Heights for a lunchtime crowd. Milo’s is planning to open a location there later this year, and Misso had already seen the signs. Then, he saw the truck and realized he didn’t have to wait for an actual store to order.
“I was happy it was coming, and now, it’s here,” he said.

The Burger Bus was conceived about a year ago as a way to both satisfy Milo’s cult-like following, and perhaps grow it. Mary Duncan Proctor, marketing manager, said serious work on creating the bus began about six months ago. The company took a food truck that had formerly been used by Steak 'n Shake, added another fryer for chicken tenders, computer equipment for taking orders, and began training employees on the intricacies of food prep inside the truck’s confines.
Faustina Gibbs of Tarrant is one of the crew. On Thursday, she held a tablet and took orders from customers as cars began to fill the parking lot.
“It’s pretty cool,” she said. “I worked on a food truck before I started with Milo’s so it’s not a new experience. And I’ve always loved Milo’s. I used to eat the sauce by itself.”
The bus hit the road about a week after Christmas. There’s a grill for cooking, another for garnishing burgers, a fry station, a chicken station, and space for an “expediter" who checks the orders before they are handed out the window.
“It’s a store on wheels,” Josh Corbett, the food truck’s general manager said. “There’s room for five to six people working inside, and one person outside taking orders on a tablet. We can accommodate weddings, corporate office events, buildings with multiple floors. We can work up to five hours off our supply of propane."
To publicize the bus, Milo’s created an Instagram account with information on where to look for it:
“We’ve tried to give people a sneak peak about when it’s coming,” Darby Baxter, the Burger Bus’ event planner, said.
There are other plans for the Burger Bus - such as unique menu items. Proctor said one plan is to offer loaded fries with queso, bacon and jalapeños. Eventually, the bus will prepare breakfast at some stops. And it could also be used as a way to road test interest in future locations.
“We’re already getting requests from people on social media,” Baxter said.
