ALBION — Darrin Albanese’s daughter Kaleigh is a big fan of her dad’s homemade spaghetti sauce.

“She would always say ‘Daddy, why don’t you sell your sauce?’” Albanese said.

That was years ago, Kaleigh turns 20 soon and as of last fall, she got her wish.

And her photograph on the label.

Albanese’s Finest Gourmet Pasta Sauce is now in stores throughout Western New York and will soon be in more as Tops Friendly Markets is expected to begin putting it on the shelves at 10 to 15 stores within a few weeks.

The sauce, as Albanese’s slogan says, “has an undeniable homemade taste” and is made from fresh herbs and spices, all natural with no added sugar or preservatives.

It’s his own recipe, one he “tweaked” from his family’s various homemade sauces.

His family owned Albanese’s Restaurant in Albion fore more than 20 years and, like many Italian families, always had sauce on Sundays.

Albanese started making his own about 20 years ago, with friends telling him the same thing his daughter did: You should sell your sauce.

At a family sauce cook-off at friend Scott Hildreth’s house in 2013, Albanese’s sauce took top prize. More people encouraged him to sell the sauce.

It wasn’t until a year ago, though, that Albanese, 52, finally decided to do it.

He began by sending out samples to Cornell University for testing of such things as shelf life and whether the sauce met federal guidelines. It progressed from there. Albanese hooked up with Tony Perry of Permac Enterprises in Bergen, Perry began the business to manufacture his own sauce, “Coach Tony’s Gourmet Beef Sauce.”

He now has more than 20 companies who contract with him to make sauce.

Albanese got his first jars bottled and began hitting the stores, mainly in Orleans and Monroe counties.

With his daughter often tagging along, the two would hand out free samples.

The first store to sell Albanese’s sauce was ANG Shur Sav in Churchville.

Now, the sauce is in about 20 stores, from Sav-A-Lot in Albion and Batavia, to stores in Webster and Irondequoit and one in Lewiston. He even has it on the shelves at Oliver Candies’ Elba location.

Two weeks ago, Albanese and his daughter passed out samples at Miller’s Bulk Food on Ridge Road in Ridgeway. They sold 75 jars.

Now, Albanese is in business with Tops.

“I was told I was one of the fastest to get into Tops,” he said. “My product runs have quadrupled.”

Sav-A-Lot is having a special deal for the entire month of March, with a big display to push the gourmet sauce.

Albanese also plans on marketing a meat sauce in May.
