In celebration of National Hot Sauce Day, Instacart recently released some data related to how hot sauce preferences vary around the United States.
Their report revealed that the top three hot sauces nationwide are Frank's RedHot, Cholula, and Tabasco – no big surprises there. However, the company also took a look at which hot sauces were the "most uniquely popular' on a state-by-state basis based on Instacart purchases, and Colorado's top pick is one that can't be missed.
The most popular 'uniquely Colorado' hot sauce was Nanita's Finest, which is a New Mexican-style green chile hot sauce line originally made at Consuelo's New Mexican Restaurant in Fort Collins. According to the company, it's "long been a standard to which other green chile sauces have been measured," with a history of being served up at more than 20 restaurants and sold online and in retail stores, including some Whole Foods locations.
Not specific to a single brand, Coloradans ordered the third-most hot sauce nationwide while using Instacart, at an average of three ounces per customer – and keep in mind, not all Instacart customers order hot sauce.
Another interesting hot sauce-related data point that was mentioned in the report addressed the Huy Fong Sriracha shortage, which has greatly impacted whether or not this popular item can be found on store shelves. Once dubbed America's favorite hot sauce, this popular green-capped bottle has been absent from many stores around the country over the past year or so. In Colorado, the shortage is a key factor behind a 91 percent drop in Hoy Fong Sriracha Instacart orders between 2021 and the start of 2024 – one of the highest rates of decline nationwide.
