For those of us hot sauce connoisseurs, dousing your eggs in fiery red liquid may be as second nature as brushing your teeth in the morning. Take it from fellow spice enthusiast Ree Drummond, who is adamant that “In my ideal world, almost everything I’d eat would have some spice to it,” she says. So yes, ‘the spicier, the better’ is an opinion that many people share. But have you ever wondered if your particular hot sauce preference is a hot take?
Whether you prefer Cholula, Sriracha, Frank’s RedHot, or something entirely different, there’s a fair amount of Americans who agree with you—Instacart can attest to that. The online grocery platform has once again released a report on the top 10 hot sauces in America as well as the most uniquely popular hot sauce brand in each state based on their purchase data from 2023.
Starting at the top of the list is Frank’s RedHot. The classic American hot sauce is a must for chicken wings and buffalo chicken dip and has a slight buttery flavor with a mild-medium spice level. The runners-up, in order of most to least beloved in America, are Cholula (a Pioneer Woman favorite), Tabasco, Texas Pete, Burman’s, Tapatio, Louisiana Hot Sauce, Huy Fong Sriracha, Valentina, and Crystal.
The findings also reveal that Frank's holds the distinction of being the most uniquely popular choice in the majority of states, with 16 states, mainly in the North East, surpassing the national average in its purchase. Following closely behind in second is the original Louisiana Hot Sauce with eight states, most of which are in the South, fitting for the Southern hot sauce brand.
Frank’s RedHot climbed its way to the top from second place, overtaking last year’s leading pepper elixir, Huy Fong Sriracha. The passing of crowns may be due partly to the Sriracha shortage of 2023, which led to the absence of the iconic green-tipped bottle from shelves for most of the year. Luckily, the stir-fry enhancer and mayo mixer is making its way back onto shelves all across the country, with Nebraska being the #1 most likely state to find it in 2024, Instacart finds. While it may not be in first place anymore, Sriracha has still managed to make the ranks at #8.
Did this list surprise you? And did any of the top-ranking hot sauces replace Sriracha for you in 2023? Let us know in the comments!
