Ever wondered why some McDonald’s like to get stingy with the sauce on your orders? Well one former employee has explained what rules staff have to abide by.

Sometimes you do, sometimes you don’t and sometimes a friendly staff member gives it to you for free anyway.
But one former employee on the question-and-answer website Quora gave insight into how it works behind the scenes.
User Ivan Josiah Lapis worked for McDonald’s for 2 years as a grill master, and his answer has been upvoted by other user’s who also worked at the fast food restaurant.
Answering whether McDonald’s employees are told not to give out too much sauce he said: “We're not told not to give out 'too much sauce' but instead we are told that each specific purchase has a defined sauce packet given for free.
“For example, getting a 4 or 6 pack nugget you are allocated 1 free sauce packet. However, at our own discretion, we can give an extra free packet if they got a 6 pack nugget.
"If you got a 10 pack nugget, you are provided 2 for free automatically and another for free at our discretion, if the customer asks. If you got a 20 pack, you get 3, and another extra at our own discretion.”
He went on to explain this strategy was employed as a way to cut costs.
“For every 20 or so packets we save, we don't have to order another box of them. So, we have more on hand longer and less risk of running out,” the user continued.
“The main reason we charged for extra packets is to prevent abuse. It's fair to assume that two packets of sauce is enough for a 6 pack nugget, right? If you need more than that, then what the heck are you doing with the nuggets?” he added.
“So, as cost control, we charge for extra to prevent abuse. But, realistically we really don't mind giving extra if it makes you happy, just that the price of an item isn't just accounting for the ingredients and materials.”
Well, I can only hope that every time I head to McDonald’s the staffer is feeling generous that day.
