MITO -- Four buildings including a national cultural property were destroyed early on July 2 as an overnight blaze broke out at a soy sauce brewing factory in the city of Sakuragawa in east Japan's Ibaraki Prefecture. No injuries were reported.
According to Sakuragawa Police Station, the fire at the Suzuki Soy Sauce Factory was reported by a 78-year-old female resident in the neighborhood. The blaze razed four structures, including about 265 square meters of a two-floor wooden residential and office building recognized as a national tangible cultural property. Apart from the building, about 1,000 square meters of the wood- and iron-framed factory were destroyed, along with two storehouses.
The mixed-use main building built during the Edo period (1603-1867) along with the "Nagaya-mon" longhouse-style gate were recognized as national tangible cultural properties in December 2000. The gate was not damaged.
A man in his 60s living nearby said a female neighbor alerted him about the blaze at around midnight. As the flames were already quite high, the man said he gathered his most precious belongings and evacuated onto the street until dawn.
The factory was located in the Makabe old town, a district full of historic structures which draw tourists to the area. "This is quite a shame, because the brewery was operating as an asset to locals," the man said.
