You fight hunger with food, right?
That’s the thinking behind the latest fundraising effort by the Food Bank of Central New York.
The nonprofit agency is launching its own bottled tomato basil pasta sauce as a way to support its mission of feeding hungry people in an 11-county region of Central New York.
The product, Pantry Classics Pasta Sauce, is now available at Syracuse-area Wegmans and Tops stores. The 24-ounce jars sell for $3.99. The Food Bank is working to find other retail outlets, said Lynn Hy, the agency’s chief development officer.
The Food Bank partnered with Giovanni Foods of Baldwinsville to produce and package the sauce. Giovanni is a long-time packager for many “private label” brands.
The Food Bank of CNY distributes food for the hungry by working with 367 partner agencies in Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and St. Lawrence counties.
In its last fiscal year, the Food Bank distributed 17.4 million pounds of food, enough to provide 14.5 million meals, Hy said.
Its annual budget is about $16 million, Hy said. Of that, roughly $9 million comes from state programs, $1.9 million from federal programs and about $4.7 million from various community initiatives. One of those was the recent Savor Syracuse event, which raises about $100,000 each year.
The new pasta sauce should add to the community aid, Hy said, but the agency doesn’t yet have an estimate of how much it will raise.
“Since this is our first time making a venture like this, we don’t have an estimate but if the sauce is well liked, it could add a nice amount of funding to help sustain our work,” Hy wrote in an email.
“Pasta sauce is a pantry staple in households across our service area,” Karen Belcher, the Food Bank’s executive director said in a statement. “This new private label sauce will offer a delicious red sauce option for our partner agencies and people facing hunger to enjoy. With the additional sale of jars of sauce at local Wegmans and Tops Friendly Markets, the proceeds will offer a new stream of support to provide nutritious food for men, women, and children experiencing hunger.”
