ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Earlier this year, the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association met with some of the teachers who said an increase in bad behavior in students that even turns violent is a main reason so many teachers are leaving.
“It stars with simple things like no consequences for tardies, or skipping classes, or taking their phones out. And that builds up to no consequences for the bigger things,” Orange County teacher Gretchen Robinson said. “I remember hearing students say ‘Fine, send me to Student Services, they’re not going to do anything.’ And they were right.”
Another discussion was held Thursday evening to come up with solutions, like how to fix the code of conduct so discipline is doled out more consistently and keep teachers in the classroom.
Suggestions from the meeting, like a districtwide cellphone policy, will eventually go before the school board.
District officials said they hope the suggestions, if implemented, will help solve problems like the teacher vacancies.
