ANN ARBOR, MI -- One of the reasons Pam Pietryga and her husband, Terry, purchased Pizza Bob’s was to keep its Super Sub alive.
The spicy sub with ham, three salamis, mortadella, provolone cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and hot sauce is Terry’s favorite sandwich that he continues to order to this day, Pam said.
The Pietrygas were longtime-customers of Pizza Bob’s before they purchased the Ann Arbor restaurant in 2000. They have since made it their mission to continue to serve the restaurant’s popular dishes. Pam said the menu consists of pretty much everything Pizza Bob’s has offered since the 1970s.
Along with its original menu, Pam said the restaurant’s “primary focus” is to keep the friendly, family-owned atmosphere the restaurant has been known for. The restaurant opened in the mid-1960s as Pizza Loy and Dairy Joy, and eventually got its name of Pizza Bob’s through new ownership.
“The fun part overall is the fact that we have Pizza Bob alumni now who are bringing their grandchildren in and introducing them,” Pam said. “We’ve got over a 60-year history, so we’re seeing all kinds of people.”
Customers can get “just about anything” they want to top their pizzas, Pam said. Toppings include pineapple, bacon, meatballs, sausage, onions and more. Customers also can pick white or wheat crust for their pizzas.
Besides pizza, the family-owned restaurant also serves calzones, veggie subs, salads and more. Pam said the restaurant even sells milkshakes that “are to die for.”
“There will be times when most of the business is milkshakes, especially after an event,” she said. “It’s like everyone wants a milkshake.”
Pizza Bob’s has more than 20 different flavors to choose from, including seasonal flavors like peach. All of the flavors can be mixed together for no additional charge.
One milkshake flavor the restaurant offers was created by University of Michigan students and is called the Middle Column, Pam said. She said the milkshake tastes just like a Snickers bar, and is the result of students mixing every flavor from the middle column of the restaurant’s flavor sign.
Along with its milkshakes, customers also come to the restaurant for its Chipati. The dish is a salad stuffed into the restaurant’s warm pizza dough. Inside there are tomatoes, green peppers, sweet red peppers, mushrooms, lettuce, cheese and the restaurant’s Chipati Sauce.
The secret Chipati Sauce is sold all over the United States, Pam said. It’s hard to describe the flavor, Pam said, but those who eat it can expect something tangy, but not spicy.
Pizza Bob’s, 800 S. State St., is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. Find the restaurant online, on social media or by phone at 734-665-4517.
