When Jets running back Breece Hall secured Joe Flacco’s pass at the Ravens’ 16 yard line, his eyes lit up.
Maybe it was NFL debut jitters –– or New York’s constant momentum stalls on offense –– but Hall’s positive moment soon turned into disarray after Ravens safety Chuck Clark smacked the ball out of his arms, forcing another turnover in the Jets’ 24-9 loss on Sunday.
Hall, a second round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, was one of many Jets rookies to make their debuts on Sunday. He posted 61 total yards and looked inexperienced during most of his rushing attempts. In fact, his first career NFL run was swallowed up by Baltimore defensive tackle Justin Madubuike, which set the inconsistent tone early on. He was the bright spot on some drives –– recording 20 yards on New York’s sixth offensive possession, which ended in a punt –– but mostly looked lost in the contest.

The Jets had no choice but to give their rookies a prominent role in Week 1. Once Mekhi Becton, Zach Wilson and Duane Brown went down with injuries, coach Robert Saleh turned to the “new toys” on his roster to take on former MVP, Lamar Jackson. He knew they would have some struggles, but based on his comments last week, he was looking for more in their debuts.
“It’s going to be fun to watch them play,” Saleh said last week. “Again, they’re going to have rookie moments, but one thing I’ll tell you is they’re going to play their absolute tails off.”
Sauce Gardner
The Jets’ top pick showed poise in his fist game
Sauce Gardner, whom New York selected with the No. 4 pick in April, showcased excellent coverage against Ravens tight end Mark Andrews near the end of the second quarter, halting a touchdown from the two-time Pro Bowler. His final statline: two solo tackles and one pass defended.
Gardner’s lowlight of the day? A miscommunication between him and Lamarcus Joyner in coverage, which resulted in a 55-yard touchdown from Jackson to Rashod Bateman to put Baltimore up 21 points.
Once Gardner boosts his playbook knowledge, he’ll avoid missteps like this and develop into a weapon in Salah’s secondary.
Garrett Wilson
Garrett Wilson didn’t touch the field until there were 3 minutes to go in the first quarter.
Once he did, he instantly showed why the Jets picked him with the No. 10 pick in the draft. Wilson turned a horrible pass from Flacco on 3rd and 10 into a 9-yard, near first down reception –– which isn’t a bad way to start a career.

Wilson wasn’t targeted much, but finished with 52 yards, four receptions and a smooth 19-yard catch in the fourth quarter.
Max Mitchell
Fourth rounder Max Mitchell didn’t expect to play on Sunday.
But following Becton and Brown’s injuries, the 300 lb tackle from Louisiana was forced into a tough starting position. Despite pressuring mounting, Mitchell played well in the first half. He maintained leverage against a tough Ravens defensive line and looked better than veteran George Fant at times.
Once he gave up a minus-five yard sack to Patrick Queen and Madubuike early in the third quarter, his confidence started to falter –– shaking his pass and run blocking for most of the second half. Mitchell will need to recover soon, since tackle is a crucial position need for them at this point.
Jermaine Johnson
After sliding in April’s draft, Jermaine Johnson wanted to prove himself in his first game.
For the most part, he was able to do this. Johnson recorded the first sack of his career in the second quarter, splitting the tackle with defensive lineman Jacob Martin. With pieces like Johnson, Carl Lawson, Quincy Williams and Quinnen Williams, the Jets’ defensive line depth will cause issues for opposing offensive lines this season.
