WHEELING — Northwood Health Systems opened its new state-of-the-art 28,000 square-foot, behavior health clinic Monday. The facility is adjacent to the company’s administrative offices at the corner of 19th and Wood streets in Wheeling.
Northwood’s new clinic better enables it to meet its mission of providing high-quality, cost effective behavioral healthcare to those experiencing addiction, anxiety, depression and other forms of mental illness in the Wheeling community and surrounding areas.
Northwood’s clinic was formerly located on the campus of the Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling since Northwood’s inception more than 50 years ago. According to Northwood officials, when the OVMC closed, Northwood decided to invest in developing a new state-of-the-art behavior health clinic adjacent to its administrative offices, which has been located at its current location for more than two decades.
Construction began on the new facility in June of last year. In addition to all the mental health and addiction services previously offered at their OVMC location — including psychiatric evaluation, medication management, individual and group counseling and medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders -the new clinic offers additional services, including assertive community treatment and mental health urgent care. Assertive community treatment is an outreach service into the community for folks who suffer from severe and persistent mental illness.
Mark Games, president and CEO of Northwood, said he is very excited about opening the new facility. The new campus has a specially designed 16-bed crisis stabilization unit, provides detoxification and mental health crisis services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
“We’re also expanding our medication-assisted treatment programs and have provided much nicer accommodations on our crisis stabilization unit,” Games explained. “I’m incredibly excited to offer this (facility) to the Wheeling community. Right now with the pandemic, behavioral health services have never been more necessary and so to be able to offer services quickly and expand services to the Wheeling community during the pandemic has been a real privilege.”
The new campus employs 125 people. That includes an experienced group of clinicians: six prescribers, eight psychologists and 12 therapists on staff, so one can walk into the clinic anytime for an initial evaluation.
Founded in 1967, Northwood Health Systems is a nonprofit behavioral health center providing a comprehensive continuum of care to serve citizens of Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel counties.
