Caledonia — Caledonia Community School buildings are being recognized at the state level for their work in the Multi-Tiered System of Supports.

Multi-Tiered System of Supports is a framework for providing research-based instruction for academics and behavior, which are matched to student needs, based on data, and monitored routinely to determine progress.

Since 2012, Caledonia has implemented MTSS to provide every student with a strong core curriculum and behavioral intervention.

The district earned the MTSS Data Utilization award, for looking at PK-12 student data in areas including attendance, behavior and academic performance during the 2021-2022 school year.

“We used a tool called the district capacity assessment,” Superintendent Dedrick Martin said. “After collecting this data, we evaluated our success—as well as areas to continue growing—at using a multi-tiered system of support, where additional interventions are provided for students who may need more support to learn their grade-level content.”

Nine schools in the district earned the award for digging deeper into their individual school data to understand student needs and make plans to support students.

In addition, all five elementary schools and Duncan Lake Middle School received either a GOLD and/or BRONZE honor for the processes they established for implementing an MTSS framework in reading and/or behavior.

MTSS implementation is a priority of the Michigan Department of Education
