AMSTERDAM — Mule Sauce, a hot sauce created, however improbably, by a company that makes custom-printed stickers and similar products, received two awards at ZestFest, a 17-year-old celebration of spicy fare held Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 in Dallas.
Mule Sauce won the the top prize in ZestFest's Fiery Food Challenge in the category for mild hot sauce and second place in "spicy sweet sauce, mild/medium." The Fiery Food competition has nearly 100 categories that encompass salsa, hot sauce, wing sauce, dry rub and marinade, jerky and beverage.
Mule Sauce was created by Sticker Mule, an Amsterdam company with a main business in custom-printing stickers, magnets, labels, buttons, T-shirts and more. The brainchild of a Sticker Mule executive with a passion for cooking, Mule Sauce was introduced almost on a whim to accompany a 2018 event during which Sticker Mule gave away 10,000 hamburgers to community members.
"It was a big hit, and we decided we'd go forward with it, but I said if we were going to make a hot sauce, it would have to be the best one out there," said Sticker Mule CEO Anthony Constantino, who co-founded the company in 2010. He said ZestFest was the first competition in which Mule Sauce has been entered.
The sauce's growth in the past two years has been significant. Sold mostly online via Amazon, Walmart and Sticker Mule websites, it now sells about 40,000 bottles a month, according to Constantino. The suggested retail price is $8 for a 5-ounce bottle or $18 for a case of 50 single-serve packets.
Mule Sauce is made for Sticker Mule by a contract producer. The company had planned to divide a former Amsterdam warehouse into halves containing the Mule Sauce production facility and a gym, but after another Amsterdam gym closed, Sticker Mull devoted the whole building to its new facility to absorb displaced members.
"The (production facility) was a nice idea, but we put it on hold," Constantino said. "A gym is better for more people in the community than a hot-sauce factory."
