To the Editor:
I am shocked and disgusted by the comments reported in the letter relating to a guest on LBI who happens to be Black (“Racism on LBI,” 10/12). What year is it? In what state is LBI? Has the Jim Crow South of decades ago been revived here?
As a full-time resident with roots in Surf City going back to the late 1950s, I can honestly say I have never heard of or observed any such repulsive behavior before. As I am personally offended by the conduct reported that could malign me, and every other resident and guest on the Island, a response is required.
The offending, unidentified woman had no business or right to interrogate anyone based on race alone. Furthermore, no such right would exist for the beach patrol or sworn officers under the circumstances presented.
A man is quietly sitting on the public beach. In the absence of any indication of criminal activity or perhaps criminal intent, he should have been left alone to enjoy the scenery like everyone else irrespective of his race. Frankly, it’s amazing that the man would even entertain the questions put to him. I suppose he initially thought the contact was non-threatening, but was quickly disabused of that determination as the inquiry proceeded.
The self-appointed inquisitor should be ashamed of herself and offer a public apology to the victim as well as the public at large. We are all sullied by such egregious behavior.
