MADISON, Wisc. -- Within a couple of hours after the postgame brawl between the Michigan and Wisconsin men’s basketball team on Sunday afternoon, an incident that included Michigan head coach Juwan Howard landing a punch, Michigan’s athletic director released a statement condemning the incident.
“I am aware of and watched the end of our men’s basketball game,” Manuel said in the statement. “There is no excuse for any of our staff or student-athletes to get into a physical altercation with others regardless of instigating factors.”
Manuel, who hired Juwan Howard to be the school’s head men’s basketball coach in May of 2019, said he apologized to Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh “for the totally unacceptable behavior.” He added that Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman did the same to Wisconsin chancellor Rebecca Blank.
“We will review the situation more thoroughly and work with the Big Ten Conference as they determine their disciplinary actions and will determine if further disciplinary actions are warranted,” Manuel concluded.
The Big Ten had released a statement shortly before, noting the league was aware of a “physical altercation” involving Howard. “The conference is in contact with both member institutions and is currently assessing the incident. The conference will provide more information and will take swift and appropriate disciplinary action when it completes its review.”
The incident started in the postgame handshake line. Howard didn’t like that Wisconsin had called a timeout in the final seconds of a lopsided game and let Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard know it. It escalated from there, with Howard punching a Wisconsin assistant coach and several players throwing punches as well.
Howard was asked in his postgame press conference if he anticipated being suspended for his role. “It’s up to (the Big Ten) and I will respect whatever decision they end up making,” he said.
Michigan lost the game, 77-63.
