As we have reported several times, student behavior is a major issue in the Manitowoc Public School District. In fact, Superintended Mark Holzman called the situation a “crisis in our buildings.”
The Board of Education has created a Student Behavior Advisory Committee to address the situation. We spoke with Board President Dave Nickels, who explained that the board has been trying to address the issue for several years, but he thinks they need to find more effective methods.
He explained that he “put together a group of former teachers and parents of our students to look at providing advice to our administration to better address misbehavior by students, and to help our teachers.”
Nickels said that the group will be meeting every week in an attempt to fix the issue before the end of the school year. When asked what is causing the uptick in behavioral issues, Nickels put some of the blame on the people in public office. “We have a State Assembly that is encouraging students with a bill to bring weapons to school, and people to bring weapons to church. That really concerns us.” Nickels said.
The bill he is referring to was created by Assemblyman Shae Sortwell of Two Rivers, which aims to lower the concealed carry permit age restriction from 21 to 18-years-old.
Nickels also said that behavior issues can be found across the state, and across the US. “Fortunately, we haven’t had as many incidents of physical violence occurring, but it does concern us,” he said. “It’s something that’s going across the nation, and with social media passing these things around people become more aware of it.”
Another aspect of the situation is the time lost in class. Nickels said that every time a student acts up, every student can lose as many as 10 to 15 minutes of valuable class time. Nickels said bluntly, “We can’t let that continue.”
