The Tennessee Chancellor said she is “astonished” and sickened” by fans’ behavior in the closing minutes of the Vols’ 31-26 loss to Ole Miss late Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said fans’ actions were unacceptable.

It was a late nightas both released statements in the aftermath of what can only be described as chaos in Knoxville.

Donde Plowman released a statement after fans held up the last minute of the game after a controversial, fourth-down spot went against the Vols by throwing debris on the field. A golf ball is seen nearly hitting Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, who was the head coach at Tennessee in 2009.

“I am astonished and sickened by the behavior of some Vol fans at the end of tonight’s game,” Plowman tweeted. “Good sportsmanship must be part of who we are as Volunteers. Behavior that puts student athletes, coaches, visitors, and other fans at risk is not something we will tolerate.”

Sankey said he is exploring his authority to impose penalties.

“The conference has established expectiations for behavior and sportsmanship, and the actions of fans at Saturday night’s game were unacceptable under any circumstances,” the statement read. “We are accustomed to intense competition every week, but under no circumstances is it acceptable to endanger the contest participants and disrupt a game. We will review existing conference policies and the commissioner’s authority to impose penalties and communicate with the leadership at the University of Tennessee - and all of the SEC’s member universities - to make certain this situation is not repeated.”

With under a minute left and Ole Miss leading 31-26, Tennessee faced a fourth and 24 from the Tennessee 36. Hendon Hooker completed a pass to Jacob Warren for 23 yards to the Ole Miss 41. The play was reviewed as it appeared there was a chance Hooker stretched out for the first down. However, after a review, the play stood as called on the field.

Fans began voicing their displeasure, then everything from water bottles to - as SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic reported - vape pens and even a bottle of mustard started flying.

The Tennessee band, dance team and cheerleaders ran for cover as both teams met at the middle of the field and play was suspended for roughly 20 minutes. Officials from both schools met on the field to discuss the situation.
