LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The man who hit and killed 8-year-old Layla Aiken at her Cape Coral bus stop in March 2019 before leaving the scene was released from prison early on good behavior.
Logan Hetherington, who was 19 at the time of the deadly hit-and-run crash, took a plea deal and was sentenced to two years in prison as a youthful offender.
He was released from prison on Friday morning, instead of his original scheduled date of February 2022, due to gain time, which is when prisoners can gain time off of their sentences for satisfactory behavior. According to court records, Hetherington earned 109 days of gain time.
Court records show Hetherington still lives in Cape Coral. He will now be on house arrest for two years, followed by two years of probation.
Hetherington’s drivers license is also suspended for a year.
