Mark Zuckerberg's Bizarre BBQ Sauce Bookend Gets the Meme Treatment - Newsweek

Mark Zuckerberg made an announcement on Thursday on the future of Facebook, but it's his surprising choice of décor that caught the attention of internet users.

Despite the rest of the room looking straight out of Architectural Digest, there was one distracting feature—a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's casually used as a bookend. The strange choice of décor led to a slew of memes surrounding its intent.

Zuckerberg announced virtually that the parent company of Facebook would be changing its name to Meta in a bid to rebrand. The Facebook founder said during the event that the name Facebook is no longer representative of the parent company as a whole. "From now on, we're going to be the metaverse first. Not Facebook first. Facebook is one of the most used products in the world. But increasingly it doesn't encompass everything we do."

"Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product," he said. "But over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company."

Sitting in the back of the set-up though was an instantly recognizable bottle of BBQ sauce, used in place of a bookend. The confusing choice of décor left viewers and social media users scratching their heads. But it's not the first time the tech founder has featured Sweet Baby Ray's in a livestream, and caught heat for it online.

In 2016, Zuckerberg internet-famously livestreamed his weekend at home smoking meats in the garden. The stream was infamously awkward and Zuckerberg was noted for his monotone delivery, as well as his repeated use of the term "meats."

In the livestream, Zuckerberg said "meats" 13 times and referenced Sweet Baby Ray's 10, as he explained he was using it to barbeque. Almost instantly "smoking meats" became a successful meme, seeing compilation videos and autotuned remixes on YouTube.

Despite clearly having an affection towards the BBQ sauce, that doesn't exactly explain why he chose to use it as a bookend—but social media's been taking a guess.

"That's not where humans keep the sweet baby rays, Mark," tweeted @oMarkk_.

"There's a single error in his AI coding algorithm that mistakes Sweet Baby Ray's for a bookend," joked @aquilifer13.

@katiegiacometti tweeted: "Clearly googled 'what humans like' and ran with it - Sweet Baby Ray's and puppies - that will convince them."

On Reddit, a spotting of the sauce gained over 110,000 votes as the poster simply pointed out: "Mark Zuckerberg is using BBQ sauce as a book stopper."

"'We have observed the humans enjoy this Sweet Baby Ray's food lotion. Ensure its visibility in the 2D hologram to win their trust!" joked one Reddit user.
