The microscope hanging over the Worcester Renaissance often focuses on downtown, the Canal District or Polar Park. On Thursday, city officials stood under an archway designed by Worcester artists that drew the attention elsewhere.
The arch acts as a gateway to nature trails at the intersection of College Hill, Vernon Hill and Quinsigamond Village. It also represents the latest addition in the city’s growth outside of downtown.
“The Renaissance doesn’t only come downtown, it comes to the neighborhoods. It comes through the whole city of Worcester,” City Councilor George Russell said.
City Manager Edward Augustus Jr., Mayor Joseph Petty and City Councilor Khrystian King joined Russell for the debut of the Blackstone Gateway Park arch.
Made from metal wire, the archway pays homage to the site’s past. Once home to nearby American Steel & Wire, the space now welcomes visitors to walk through the trails that wind through bird habitats, the home of a family of deer and over the Blackstone River.
Individuals entering the trail on McKeon Road is a new arch that lights up in multi-colors.
“This great amenity that we have is enjoyed by our children, grandchildren, our friends, our family, college students who are coming here,” King said. “It’s a really great quality of life invention.”
City officials leaned on local artists to design the entrance that binds nature with art.
Augustus said combining art and nature is a citywide initiative, bringing music, performances and art to public spaces.
“It brings people out. It has neighbors discover each other and make connections and find a sense of community,” Augustus said. “And we’re not just doing that downtown and we’re not just doing that at the ballpark. We’re doing that in the junction here of Quinsig Village of College Hill and Vernon Hill. Not just lifting up downtown.”
Augustus referred to the city’s arts and culture as the “secret sauce” that completes the renaissance.
The archway, not far from the Blackstone Heritage Corridor Visitor Center, is the latest ingredient.
“You’re having a taste of the secret sauce with the unveiling of this public art element,” Augustus said. “It’s going to let everyone know — because we all know, but not everybody knows — there is a park here.”
