I have attended — maybe — five Assembly meetings in my 35-plus years of living in Anchorage. Lately, I have been very interested in the issue regarding another new mask mandate (AO 2021-91) and have given the recent meetings my full attention. I am impressed by how patient and professional the Assembly members are, especially when listening to so many people’s testimony.
However, I am shocked by how rude and obnoxious Assemblyman Chris Constant has been behaving over the past few nights. He rolled his eyes, crossed his arms, played on his phone, slumped down in his chair, showed clear signs of dismissal and exasperation, walked out in the middle of people’s testimonies, and even moved to adjourn — in a snotty tone — knowing that dozens of people were waiting patiently to speak.
Public service is difficult; I can only imagine how much time and effort our Assembly members put into serving the community. I am thankful for them. But the citizens of Anchorage deserve mature and respectful behavior from our elected officials. And I hope that Mr. Constant sees this and will conduct himself in a more professional manner in the future.
