Most people find Donald Trump bewildering. He parades his character every day for all to see: self-centeredness, compulsive lying, bullying, greed, delusions of grandeur. The news media continues to expect normalcy and humanness and are exasperated when none appear. Trump gave us a hint about the cause of his unusual behavior recently when he pondered his difficulty in understanding why Drs. Fauci and Birx had high public approval for their handling of the pandemic, whereas, to quote Trump, “Nobody likes me. It can only be my personality, that’s all.”
A group of prominent psychiatrists and psychologists has reviewed Trump’s well-documented behavior and concluded that his personality fits that of a narcissistic sociopath. We only have to examine his mishandling of the pandemic to see this for ourselves: bragging about his success while causing more cases and deaths, critical of those who disagree, and taking no responsibility. His abnormal actions should not surprise us, because the experts explain that, as a sociopath, he cannot change and is trapped in the range of behaviors that his illness allows. Hopefully, there are those in power who will be able to prevent further damage to our nation.
