Holy Cross officials are slamming students for their “disappointing off-campus behavior” after a recent large apartment party with maskless revelers in close quarters amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Among the students at the Saturday gathering, one has tested positive for the virus and there are several potential positive COVID-19 cases, the college said.
Holy Cross Public Safety officers responded to the Saturday night party at an off-campus apartment on College Street.
“Not only did the number of people in attendance exceed the state limit on the number of people at a gathering, but attendees were not wearing masks or adhering to physical distancing guidelines,” college officials said in a letter to students. “This behavior violates state and local guidelines as well as the Holy Cross Community Commitment, which students acknowledged and agreed to in July.
“Needless to say, this is a profoundly disappointing situation,” they added in the letter titled, “Disappointing Off-Campus Behavior.”
The students responsible for the party will be “held accountable under our Community Standards process,” the college said.
Holy Cross is going fully remote for the fall semester.
“Our ability to return to campus depends in great part upon community members’ willingness to adhere to state, local and college health guidelines and requirements,” officials wrote. “Put simply: We will not be able to welcome back the entire campus community, or even a larger cohort than we have this fall, if students cannot demonstrate the self-discipline, mutual respect, and care for others by following requirements to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
Holy Cross is working with the Worcester Division of Public Health to help identify people who may have attended the party as part of their contact tracing efforts.
“We are terribly disappointed by the events of the past weekend,” officials wrote. “The students who took part in this event should be equally disappointed. We can do better. We must do better.”
Coronavirus outbreaks have been tied to parties across the nation and in Massachusetts.
In July, a Cape Cod coronavirus cluster emerged after a large house party with maskless attendees in Chatham. A number of the 13 people infected at the party were restaurant workers, triggering shutdowns at a number of Chatham eateries.
In Falmouth, a lifeguard cluster was tied to a social gathering after work hours. At least 11 town lifeguards tested positive for the virus.
