Infrastructure Development Can Create Social Justice: Jokowi

Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has reiterated that his infrastructure push is intended to reduce social and economic discrepancies between regions.

"Infrastructure development is not only beneficial for economic growth. It is also crucial for social justice," President Jokowi said here on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.

Indonesian economy grew by 5.17 percent in 2018. It was Indonesia's highest annual growth in five years.
 
In addition to that, Indonesian economy grew by 5.18 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018. It was slightly stronger than earlier expectations.

"If I only think about political benefits, I will only develop provinces in Java island," President Jokowi said.

Indonesia's poverty rate stood at 9.66 percent in September 2018. It decreased by 0.46 percentage point compared to September 2017.

In the meantime, the number of poor in Indonesia stood at 25.67 million people in September 2018. It decreased by 0.91 million people compared to September 2017.

"As long as our brothers and sisters in Papua still have bad infrastructures, we cannot compete against our neighboring countries," President Jokowi said.
