‘Basic Tenets of Responsible Human Behavior’

Unfortunately, we’ve experienced more shootings: Atlanta, Boulder, etc. Obviously, the proverbial question “Why?” will be asked and discussed. What additional security measures, if any, will be implemented?

Some will say it’s the gun’s fault. Simply, it’s the shooter’s fault. The gun was only the tool used.

Some time ago, the display of the “Ten Commandments” in public places, including schools, was banned. Six commandments make no reference to God. I will label them “Basic Tenets of Responsible Human Behavior.”

They are: “Honor your father and mother, you shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor, and you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or anything that is your neighbors.” We should be reminded daily of these “basic tenets,” especially children.  What does religion have to do with these?

In this era of permissiveness, a great deal of energy is expended trying to predict and rationalize “irrational” behavior.  Some “external” influence(s) upon the perpetrator caused the behavior and, sadly, the results. Shouldn’t the perpetrator know better?

The easiest solution for some politicians is to “ban guns.” Does anyone remember how successful “prohibition” was?  Labeling marijuana “illegal?” Limiting, if not banning, gambling?

What are the deterrents? There are too many politicians and others advocating lighter sentences for those convicted of various crimes, allowing convicted felons to vote after release, enabling released felons to hide their criminal record, abolishing the death penalty, etc.

Suppressing public expression and display of the “Basic Tenets” isn’t conveying the message I believe is shared by a vast majority of the population.

Whatever religious or anti-religious beliefs may exist, the challenge for the community starts with discussing and agreeing certain types of behavior and subsequent actions are unacceptable and there must be a “price” to pay.

Another decade, another crisis demanding our surrender

When I hear our leaders talk about the climate crisis, it reminds me that right after the war there were those who said that the world would be out of oil by 1950. Now they insist that the world will soon end if we don’t convert to wind mills and solar panels for our energy. In the 1970s we were going into a new ice age. Now it’s global warming, and pandemic. It’s just one crisis after another.

We must surrender our liberty to the government so they can save us from impending disaster. It’s our only hope! Perhaps I am somewhat jaded now because I am in my ninth decade, and I have heard some version of the same message all my life, and I remain unconvinced.

The founders had the idea that the federal government had three jobs: One, defend our borders; two, deliver the mail; and three, leave us alone, because the states were free and independent states. Once freedom is lost it is not likely to be restored. The thing we learned during the war was that in a life-threatening crisis we will sacrifice and grant the federal government  extreme power that it does not otherwise have. Since then they just keep inventing crisis in an effort to to scare the citizens into submission.

The United States was conceived as a republic, not a democracy, because the founders knew that a democracy has its own destruction built into it. If we care about the future of this country, we need to explain this to our kids.
