As your representative, I am tasked with representing the residents of Cheshire. I take my responsibility very seriously in standing up for all constituents of the 89th District and all citizens of Connecticut.
Recent events in Cheshire have compelled me to come forward and say, in no uncertain terms, I vehemently oppose those who bully, use personal attacks or who hide behind the anonymity of a computer keyboard and spew hate speech and threats at individuals without consequence.
To the best of my ability, I will oppose these hostile tactics and hope the venom is brought to light and those that participate are punished by the appropriate authorities. The situation in Cheshire is part of a national trend to use this divisive behavior in normal everyday discourse. Those who light a fire of chaos and then blame the victim have become emboldened by the media coverage they receive which further encourages this rotten behavior.
This disturbing and destructive pattern has trickled down to the local level and is now pitting neighbor against neighbor.
I have always believed that what is happening on the federal level, while important, is far less important than what is occurring in our towns and neighborhoods. I have met many wonderful people in Cheshire over the years. Unfortunately, sometimes the loudest voice come from the vocal, and I understand the attacks on the Oris family does not represent most Cheshire residents. I could no longer stay silent, as I know Cheshire is much better than this.
We need to take a stand for not only the victims of this abuse, like Rob Oris and his family, but for all of us. Today it is him, tomorrow it could be you. If we band together and send a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated and will be exposed to the light of day, we can make our community a safer and better place to live, work and raise our families.
