This $15 Tank Top Is My Wardrobe’s Secret Sauce - Vogue

In our weekly Vogue team meetings on Zoom, that digital sea of pixelated faces, there are some really good outfits. One might spot a groovy kaleidoscope-print top by Asai, a vintage tiger-print D&G blouse, or a graphic Wales Bonner camp shirt, for example. Plus, Zoom’s Brady Bunch–style gallery format offers up a cornucopia of style that hits you in the face all at once. But you know when a look really stands out when someone side chats you via text or on Slack: “Where’d you get that top?” or “Tell me about the top,” or simply “Nice top.” It’s the ultimate confirmation in the world of videoconferencing that your outfit, at least the top portion, is a winner.

Granted, this has only happened to me twice: once when I wore a very colorful graphic Our Legacy shirt that wasn’t even mine, then again last week, when I received multiple messages about my black tank. Though surprisingly simple, the top is pretty amazing actually, perfect fit and all. I had been on the quest for a black tank top with a specific cut for some time when I found it. At the time, I had been desperately trying to find a replacement for a Lauren Ralph Lauren ribbed black tank that came with a squarish high neck, narrowly cut shoulders, and halter-like straps. It’s the ultimate noughties top. My mother picked up two of them in the early 2000s at Marshalls. (She has one; she gave me the other.) She considers it one of her favorite pieces. Sadly, they don’t make the style anymore. I wore this top till it faded and needed a fresh revamp. Preferring to shop things that are actually from the noughties, I browsed my usual places—eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, and Depop—to try and find one. But there was nada.

Then one day, I was casually browsing Amazon. For the search, I typed in the standard words: high neck, black tank. Voilà! There it was: a black tank worn by what I think is some sort of AI version of a model in cut-off denim shorts. (Is she even real, or is she just really, really smooth and poreless?) The piece is made by a company called Make Me Chic out of California, and rings in at $13.99. Not a bad price at all. The tank itself has the same vibe as underwear: a loungy basic that some of the commenters on Amazon wear for daily tasks and to work out in. Multiuse, okay!

Suffice it to say, I’ve worn the tank multiple times a week, so much so that I probably need another one. When I’m feeling fancy, I’ll pair it with these prized vintage Gucci python-print nuclear blue flares (they’re from the spring 2000 collection, to be precise—Tom Ford era) I found on Etsy for the ultimate high-low effect. On my more casual days, I’ll throw it on with a simple pair of faded Wrangler jeans. This tank truly goes with anything. That said, I’m not going to give up my quest for a vintage incarnation of the shirt—I’d rather buy something already worn—but in the meantime, this one will certainly get its worth of wear.
