New Bandera hot sauce line Texas Hill County Hot Sauce has dips and hot sauce from pickled peppers - San Antonio Express-News

When shopping the farmers market scene, it’s always great to see new vendors and new products, especially when that leads you to taste one of the best things you have ever eaten.

A splendid 6-ounce tub of a thick pumpkin habanero dip from the Texas Hill Country Hot Sauce booth at the Saturday Bandera Market was a perfect balance of sweet and heat, giving pumpkins a chance to shine beyond the fall months. Made with ground pumpkin seeds and pickled habanero, it has a texture similar to hummus or bean dip.

It lasted all of one day before it was licked out of the container by an anonymous member of my family.

Owner Leslie Minor Oakeson sells two other pickled-pepper dips, one with jalapeño and garlic and another with serrano.

Oakeson also has a lineup of more classic 5-ounce bottled hot sauces that include fire water, red pepper, tropical habenero and a purple pepper sweet chile sauce. All of the dips and bottles sell for $7.50 each.

The sauces and dips taste fresh, because they were made fresh. Oakeson said that everything she sells on were likely made with freshly fermented ingredients packaged just a day or two prior in her home kitchen. The dips will stay fresh in your refrigerator for a few weeks; the sauces for at least a few months.

There are all sorts of possible applications for all of her products. Go straight into the dip with chips, add it to a taco, use it as a sandwich condiment or as a spicy topper for meat, eggs or vegetables. The liquid sauces paired with chicken wings has tremendous potential, particularly the tropical habenero sauce.

Currently, ordering online isn’t an option, so you have to find her to purchase it on site. She does take advance orders over the phone for pickup at these markets:

Bandera Farmers Market: 702 Main St., Bandera; 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursdays

Bandera Market: 11625 Bandera Road, Bandera; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays

Oakeson also will soon be a vendor at the Alamo Heights Farmers Market at the Quarry from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.
