Compliance with social distancing and keeping active on city beaches in Laguna Beach has been so good, city officials agreed to open beaches all day during weekdays.
The City Council on Tuesday, May 12, voted unanimously to extend present morning beach hours – from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. – to all-day active use. The council also agreed to experiment with opening the beaches from 6 a.m. to noon on weekends. The decision to amend any of these times would be left up to City Manager John Pietig’s discretion should compliance deteriorate.
The council based its decision on a report from Marine Safety Chief Kevin Snow, who told them overall compliance among beachgoers has been good. Laguna Beach last week tested loosening restrictions as part of its phased approach by opening beaches in the mornings only. It was the beachgoer’s behavior that sold Snow on the idea of easing up some more.
“In most cases, there has been good cooperation,” he said. “The city water and beaches are being cleared on time.”
Before agreeing, the council considered actions by nearby cities such as Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and San Clemente that had reopened their beaches utilizing an all-day, active-use plans dubbed “Beaches in Motion.”
“I’m looking at this for us,” Snow said. “San Diego is also having success, and Los Angles is looking at this for their model.”
“The comments have been overwhelmingly positive,” Councilman Steve Dicterow said. “After this initial quarantine, we had far fewer cases than the rest of the county. There is evidence that this is working. The lack of density has been part of the solution.”
