We’ve tasted 45 of 79 BBQ sauces from Giant Eagle and so far, these are our 8 favorites - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Say goodbye to the snow and the rain. Northeast Ohioians are more than ready to dust off the grill and kick off cook-out season. And what says summer more than a slab of your favorite meat sizzling over an open flame, ready to be slathered in a barbecue sauce sure to kick up the flavor?

Cleveland’s Best reporters Yadi Rodriguez and Brenda Cain have been taste-testing every BBQ sauce sold at Giant Eagle -- a whopping 70 bottles -- to help you decide which ones to buy this summer.

In anticipation of grocery shopping for Memorial Day weekend, below we’re unveiling our eight favorites from the 45 bottles we have tried so far. Note we’re limited this contest to just one popular grocery store due to the coronavirus pandemic. Don’t worry though, Giant Eagle’s shelves offered up a plethora of options. We will publish our full ranking of all 79 BBQ sauces in June.

And plenty of these sauces are available at other grocery stores, too.

To date, we have tried traditional, hot, bourbon, mustard, hickory, sweet and seemingly everything in between -- with prices ranging from $4 to $6.99.

With the Memorial Day holiday right around the corner -- and with more of us opting to celebrate with our family at home -- here is a sneak peek at our personal favorites so far.

Bottle says: “Made World Famous on TV and Coined the “Perfect Sauce” I’ve always been the guy behind the grill. Now I’m the man behind the sauce. I take a global approach to all of my BBQ flavors and I made no exception with this South Carolina inspired addition. Maple syrup is smoked for depth and sweetness and the perfect blend of whole grain mustards deliver texture along with a tangy finish. Put it on everything! I certainly do.”

Brenda says: This sauce ranks at the top of my list through 45 bottles sampled. It’s so thick I had to work to get it out of the bottle, but it was worth the effort! Unless you are a fan of true Carolina BBQ, this may not be one you opt for on steaks or pork, but it will be a definite winner on chicken or a burger. It has a smoky mustard flavor, with just a tinge of sweetness and just the tiniest of kick. The mustard seeds give it a unique texture.

Bottle says: “My classic Frontier BBQ sauce is nice and sweet, with a yummy, mild spice -- just enough to keep you on your toes! Use it to top cheeseburgers, drizzle it on cooked veggies, and brush it on juicy roasted chicken. It’s the BBQ sauce I reach for again and again!”

Brenda says: This very traditional sauce is so thick, you will need a spoon or a brush to add it to your meat. It doesn’t pour. But its old-fashioned, homemade flavor bangs the back of your throat with deliciousness. It will brighten the flavor of any protein you choose, but my thoughts went immediately to a meaty slab of ribs.

Guy Fieri Bourbon Brown Sugar

Price: $4.79

Nutrition per serving:

Bottle says: “Chef Guy’s sweet, sticky Bourbon Brown Sugar BBQ Sauce rocks on just about anything. Smoky Bourbon, sweet brown sugar and a hint of spicy black pepper creates off-the-hook flavor that’s a perfect complement to everything from beef to chicken, pork and seafood.”

Brenda says: Molasses and bourbon are the strong notes that assail your nostrils when this sauce is opened. You’ll experience a journey of flavors once this sauce hits your tastebuds as well. The bourbon definitely comes through, providing just the right amount of kick to light up your mouth before the sweetness settles in. Be prepared though, the burn does linger.

Price: $4.79

Nutrition per serving:

Calories 60 | Fat 0g | Sodium 210mg | Carbs 13g | Sugar 12g

Bottle says: “Infused with our own award-winning Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, our Cleveland brewpub’s signature from-scratch BBQ sauce has long delighted customers with its bold, roasted flavor and spicy kick. We’re proud to bring a taste of our pub to your kitchen, patio, or wherever good food, friends, and beer meet.”

Brenda says: I’m not a beer fan, so I wasn’t excited to taste this one. I was surprised, however, at how much I enjoyed this sauce. Its deep red color and consistency makes it look like ketchup right out of the bottle, but it has a delightful peppery flavor that provides a mild kick in the back of your throat. There is a tinge of sweetness on the back-end. The best surprise is the tiny bits of real tomato and the flecks of herbs throughout.

The Pioneer Woman Peach Whiskey BBQ Sauce

Bottle says: “My Peach Whiskey Chicken is one of the Drummond family’s favorite dinners, and this BBQ sauce brings those same scrumptious flavors to your kitchen! Sweet chunks of juicy peaches and sassy southern whiskey perfect an unexpectedly delicious dip for fried chicken tenders.”

Yadi says: So far, this peach whisky BBQ sauce is No. 1 in my rankings. It’s a super thick jelly-like texture. Chunky pieces of peaches can be found throughout. Refreshing, great summer sauce. Fruity, fresh smell when you open. The jar is a bonus because you’re able to put a spoon in it and really shake it up and scoop it out.

Bottle says: “Flavorful from-scratch beer infused sauces and dressings have long been a signature at our Cleveland brewpub. With a dash of hickory smokiness and a subtle sweetness reminiscent of Dortmunder Gold Lager’s balanced malt character, we’re proud to bring a taste of our pub to your kitchen, patio, or wherever good food, friends, and beer meet.”

Yadi says: Smooth, thick sauce. Nice consistency. Sweeter tasting but not overwhelmingly so. Some onion, garlic pieces. Very well balanced sauce with a little bit of a kick to it. The beer did not overpower the sauce. Great complement to any meat you decide to put in on.

Bottle says: “Contains no high fructose corn syrup. Our sauce is naturally flavored. Unlike many others, the #1 ingredient is tomatoes. It’s meticulously made from the finest ingredients in small batches, just like it has been for over 60 years.”

Yadi says: Smelled really good when you opened the bottle. Not as sweet as some of the others, more tangy and tomato-y. Very flavorful. Not as thick as others but the taste compensated for that.

Frank’s RedHot Thick Sauce Buffalo 'n BBQ

Bottle says: “Delish Dunk’d or Dip’d. For dipping sandwiches and more. Dip it - perfect for fries, nuggets and wraps. Top it - spread it on burgers and sandwiches. Cook it - cook boneless pork shoulder with sauce in slow cooker and serve on buns.”

Yadi says: Very dark and thick, doesn’t move on spoon. You get the kick right away. You can smell the buffalo sauce as soon as you open it. Good combo of buffalo and barbecue that you can taste in every bite. The kick lingers.
