The Shepherd Park Plaza family of Gary, Josh and Bryan Talley are not novices at the barbecue pit. Gary and his sons have been a professional barbecue cooking team, Primetime Cookers, since 1994. And one thing people always wanted to know about was their barbecue sauce.
The sauce was so popular that when Gary, the creator of the sauce, passed down the recipe to his sons, they decided to see if they could make a business out of it.
“We started in January and made about 100 of 4-ounce samples,” Josh said. “People loved it so much they started placing orders and we realized it might actually work.”
Seven months later, Come and Take It BBQ Sauce is a thriving company that is consistently outputting more and more sauce. The sauce is available online and ships across the United States, and they sale at different markets, cook-offs and tournaments. Josh said they are also in the process of getting it into retail space.
“We wanted to make something that was different that you can’t find at the grocery store,” Josh said. “We pride ourselves on being a true barbecue sauce.”
Josh explained that what makes the sauce unique is its versatility and flavor palate. The sauce isn’t too tangy, too sweet, too vinegary, too thick, too watery or too bland. Josh described it as a happy medium that will satisfy anyone’s sauce preference.
“The sauce has a touch of sweetness on the front end and as the flavor sets in has a little bit of kick,” Josh said. “We glaze our ribs with it and our kids use it as a sauce to dip their chicken nuggets in. You can really use it either way.”
The business grew day by day over the last several months. At shows people would taste the sauce and end up ordering a jar or two, then end up coming back to buy three or four jars to send off to their families.
“We’ve had customers send us a picture of their self on the couch with just a spoon saying they wished they’d bought more than one,” Josh said. “One of the things we jokingly say to people is, ‘Would you like a straw with that?’”
With a name connected to Texas history, Josh said they’ve even had people buy a jar strictly because of the name.
In the future, the Talleys hope that Come and Take It BBQ Sauce is a whole line of sauces, but for now they’re working on getting a spicier version of their sauce on the market.
“We’ve been doing this for a long time,” Josh said. “It’s been passed down generation to generation. We didn’t just decide to make a barbecue sauce one day.”
