Oswego, N.Y. — Bad student behavior is being blamed for the surge in coronavirus at SUNY Oswego, which is seeing more positive cases than most other SUNY campuses.
The college reported 52 new positive cases Sunday, increasing its total since the semester began to 148. Oswego has the second highest number of cases after SUNY Oneonta which has 723. Oneonta halted all in-person classes and on-campus activities for the fall semester on Sept. 3, shortly after it opened, because of the outbreak.
SUNY Oswego is taking steps to avoid the same fate.
SUNY Oswego tested almost all students when they arrived on campus last month and there were only three positive cases.
“… so we know that the spread we see is almost entirely due to bad behavior, flaunting restrictions and violating the pledges made to keep each other safe,” SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley said in an email sent Sunday to students, faculty and staff. “It is beyond time for you to do the right thing—for you to live by the promises you made in the Oswego Forward Pledge and abide by all directives and safety measures issued by the college, city and state.”
The Oswego Forward Pledge requires students to wear face coverings, maintain social distancing, limit interactions with others and take other coronavirus precautions.
SUNY requires campuses to halt in-person classes if 100 people on campus test positive for the virus within a 14-day period.
As of Friday at the end of its first 14-day period, SUNY Oswego had 82 positive cases. It began a new 14-day period Saturday and already has 49 on-campus cases that count toward SUNY’s 100-case threshold. In addition, three other students who take classes online tested positive.
The school is taking these steps to stop the surge:
- Cracking down on big student parties and other gatherings on and off campus. Violators will face sanctions including automatic suspension and loss of athletic eligibility. SUNY Oswego has already suspended 10 students for hosting parties;
- In-person dining in dining halls and other facilities has been suspended indefinitely;
- All sports activity has been suspended for the rest of the fall semester;
- Visitors in residence halls have been prohibited;
- Anyone who violates quarantine and isolation orders will be immediately suspended;
- Off-campus students who take classes on campus are being required to get tested again.
