Second Day of Extreme Fire Behavior Expected Ahead of Cold Front

Current Situation: Aggressive fire behavior yesterday pushed the fire east across the Crown Point Road to Pingree Park road as high temperatures, single digit humidity, and high winds accelerated fire growth to 59,051 acres with 4% overall containment. The finger of the fire that has moved into Rocky Mountain National Park continued southeast as it progressed into the Cascade, Mummy and Hague Creek drainages. The fire along the north side of Highway 14 stalled as strong winds from the northwest helped to keep this section of the fire held up along Green Ridge. On Saturday, suppression activities were focused on structure protection along Highway 14 and the Pingree Park Road. Crews improved the Killpecker line in anticipation of fire movement on the north side of Poudre Canyon.

In anticipation of another day of very active fire behavior, today’s strategy of structure protection will be similar as Saturday, where resources will be shifted within the fire area to protect values at risk ahead of the fire’s expected advance. Fire officials have made a request to Colorado Department of Fire Prevention and Control for additional engines to assist with the fire fight and structure protection. The cold front bringing rain and snow is expected to arrive Monday night. Crews will be preparing for strong winds and a possible wind shift as that front passes over the fire area.

Weather & Fuel Conditions: Extreme fire weather conditions are expected again today with single digit relative humidity and winds gusting to 40 mph out of the west.A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for today which will fuel fire growth and heavy smoke production. The cold front is to hit the area around 9 PM and temperatures will begin to fall, and the winds will shift to the northeast gusting to 50 mph. Snow accumulation is expected to be 6 to 12 inches. Over the next few days temperatures will gradually warm, the snow will melt, and fuels will once again begin to dry out.

Closures and Evacuations: Evacuation updates are expected to be modified throughout the day. Please go to https://ift.tt/3k2ps5z call the Joint Information Center open from 8a-8p (970-980-2500) for up-to-date information. As of 10:00am, Highway 14 is now closed west of Stove Prairie Road. Mandatory evacuations have been issued for Stove Prairie/Stratton Park to include Buckhorn Road (44H) to Pennock Pass, Pingree Park Road, as well as Glacier View on 74E due to immediate and imminent danger. A voluntary evacuation is in effect for County Road 74E west of Glacier View. More information on evacuation areas and road closures can be found at https://ift.tt/336rdYt. The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests has also issued a new closure order which affects recreation access north of Highway 34, west of Highway 287, and south of the Cherokee Park Road (80C); a map of that closure area can be found at https://ift.tt/3m04FkL. Rocky Mountain National Park also has additional closures in effect including Trail Ridge Road; those can be found at https://ift.tt/3m05dqS.
