GRAND RAPIDS, MI — According to an internal review of a fatal incident at John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, zoo staff are not to blame for the death of a sitatunga antelope earlier this summer.
Chopper the sitatunga antelope was attacked and killed by Jahari the pygmy hippo during the two animals’ first barrier-free introduction at the zoo on May 16. Zoo staff said the two animals, who were meant to share a new enclosure at the zoo, had seen each other through a mesh barrier for about a month prior to the incident.
