CHARLOTTE — Carowinds has announced a new chaperone policy that will go into effect this weekend.
The news comes after the park implemented a similar policy for its annual SCarowinds event. False claims of a shooting that spread through the park created chaos for parkgoers during SCarowinds last year.
Now, Carowinds says the decision to enact a chaperone policy for the entire park was made because of “increasing incidents of unruly and inappropriate behavior across our industry and at other major entertainment venues.”
“We are committed to keeping Carowinds a place where families and friends come together to enjoy a one-of-a-kind park full of fun experiences and immersive entertainment,” the park said in its new code of conduct.
Starting Saturday, Carowinds says all guests 15 years old and under must have a chaperone who is at least 21 in order to be at the park after 4 p.m. That chaperone needs valid photo identification and can only be with 10 or fewer guests ages 15 or younger.
Chaperones are required to be with their entire group at entry, inside the park with them, and available by phone throughout the visit.
Any guest age 15 or younger who doesn’t have a chaperone will be subject to ejection, park officials said.
“We believe these changes will help ensure that Carowinds continues to have a positive atmosphere where generations of families and friends can gather for a day of safe fun and good food,” the policy reads. “Millions of guests have counted on us for exactly that, and we will continue to deliver on that promise for generations to come.”
Parent Katelynn Arbelo said this is a teaching moment for parents and young people.
“I think we get further and further away from holding ourselves and young people accountable for some of their actions,” she said.
