SAGINAW, MI — Brian Patrick’s hot sauce brand, Eddie’s, started out as a heartfelt tribute to his father, who died in 2016. Now, it can be found on store shelves in one of Michigan’s top tourist destinations.
Since then, the Saginaw man and his wife, Jackie Patrick, have perfected the recipe, grown their business, B & J’s, and captured the interest of retailers and consumers throughout Saginaw County and beyond.
“It’s flying off the shelves right now,” said Brian Patrick of Saginaw. “I’m even sending bottles out to different places from Saginaw to Arizona to California, Houston, Texas, Dallas, Texas. It’s got a good name. It’s buzzing everywhere.”
Brian Patrick said Eddie’s Hot Sauce is “full of flavor.” It’s named after his late father, Eddie Patrick, who died in 2016.
“You get a nice little burn, and you get a nice sweet taste right behind it,” he said, noting that his wife has taken over in the kitchen. “(Mine) was good, but when she did it, hers was like terrific.”
Eddie’s Hot Sauce can be purchased for $4.99 a bottle at Jack’s Fruit and Meat Market stores on Bay Road and in Bay City, Vargas & Sons Tortillas and Liquor Basket. After Brian Patrick met Michael Zehnder, Bavarian Inn Lodge owner and general manager, at a food truck event, it also hit the shelves at Frankenmuth Cheese Haus and other locations in Michigan’s Little Bavaria, he said, adding that Zehnder has been a business mentor to him.
“It’s a different type of feeling to go into a store and actually see your creation on a shelf,” Patrick said.
Zehnder said he was touched by Patrick’s story and he liked his product.
“Over the years we developed a relationship and I am proud he has started production and marketing Eddie’s Hot Sauce. We currently have it in inventory at Frank’s Muth and the Cheese Haus in Frankenmuth,” he said. “Our team members and customers have told us they like the mildly sweet and spicy blend of flavors that is different than most hot sauces on the market.”
Brian Patrick said seeing the brand inspired by his late father grow in this way has been “a blessing.”
“It’s overwhelming. It’s heartwarming,” he said. “I just wanted to keep his name and his legacy alive.”
Brian Patrick said B & J’s is launching new products soon. He aims to continue to grow the business, create local jobs and donate a portion of proceeds to cancer research in memory of his father.
