FORT MYERS, Fla. — A passenger on a flight out of Southwest Florida International Airport was fined $24,000 by the Federal Aviation Administration for his unruly behavior towards the flight crew.
On March 31, 2021, the passenger, who was not named by the FAA, was on a flight from Fort Myers to Detroit, Michigan. The FAA claims that the passenger repeatedly took off his face mask after the flight crew repeatedly asked him to keep it on.
The passenger swore at other passengers and accused them of stealing his property. When crew members repeatedly asked the man to calm down, he yelled at one of them, “This is America. This is free speech. What don’t you understand?”
He was reseated in the last row of the plane and a crew member was forced to sit next to him because he had allegedly become a security risk, the FAA said.
The flight crew reported that the man appeared to be drunk, saying the passenger admitted that he had been drinking in the airport before the flight.
The passenger then jumped out of his seat, stood very close to a crew member as if he would lunge at her, pointed his finger in her face and shouted, “You!”
For security reasons, the flight was diverted to Atlanta and law enforcement was requested to meet the flight at the gate. The flight then arrived in Detroit 45 minutes late, the FAA said.
In another incident reported by the FAA, a passenger on a May 14, 2021, Allegiant flight to Punta Gorda from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was fined $8,250 for disobeying the flight’s alcohol policy.
While flight attendants were passing out drinks, the passenger and three other people each ordered Bloody Mary mixes and ice. The passenger then took out a bottle of vodka from his carry-on bag and passed it to the other three passengers, despite the flight attendant’s warning that he could not drink his own alcohol.
A flight attendant saw the man drinking the vodka and again repeated the flight’s policy to him, asking him to hand over the bottle.
The passenger gave the crew member a half-empty bottle and an empty one, and said “kiss my a**” and “get away,” the FAA reported.
The man became loud, argumentative and rude, the FAA said. He was given a notice by the crew member warning that his behavior violated FAA regulations and he crumpled it, threw it and called the crew member a vulgar name before flipping her off as she walked by his seat.
