Reader's View: Drive a magnet for trash, trashy behavior - Duluth News Tribune

Perhaps if he spent more time at his vacation home in Duluth, he'd be as frustrated as I am with the behaviors the roadway invites. The dumping of furniture, TVs, and tires is common when the road is open. I took a picture of discarded items and trash while walking on Lincoln Park Drive the week of Jan. 18, intending to share it with city councilors, before reading about Marek's uninformed efforts.

Additionally, I believe the roadway decreases public safety. I would urge planners to consult Duluth Police for information on the behaviors invited by spaces that are both isolated and car-accessible. It is not uncommon to encounter idling vehicles emitting the scents of marijuana along this roadway.

Meanwhile, motorists who desire a beautiful drive have numerous alternatives along Skyline Parkway.

I appreciate Marek’s efforts to preserve our history, but according to the Bygones in the Jan. 23 News Tribune, there were only 5,540 motor vehicles in Duluth in 1921. The number of cars using the park in the 1905 photo Marek showed to the newspaper were not comparable to today’s use.

I applaud the Duluth Park Department's promotional efforts, such as the holiday posters. Judging by well-trodden pathways in the snow, this was widely popular.

After living in Africa for two years, I remain confounded by our willingness to sacrifice beauty, safety, and community in favor of allowing vehicles to reach each and every square inch.
