UTICA — Upstate Cerebral Palsy has added three Board Certified Behavioral Analysts to its Tradewinds Education Center in Utica.

The Tradewinds program provides education and residential services to children between the ages of 5 and 21 who have been diagnosed with a severe behavioral and/or developmental disability.

The program offers services for students who attend school and return home at the end of the day, as well as for students who attend school and live in residences on its campuses in Rome, Utica, and Chadwicks.

A primary emphasis of the Tradewinds program is to provide a therapeutic environment for children, supporting the development of social skills and communication, UCP say.

Using a comprehensive approach with each child, the education, clinical and residential staff, in conjunction with families, develop and implement goals and objectives focused on the overall development of each student, providing a supportive, positive environment for all students to learn and grow, UCP adds.

The new behavioral analysts include:

• Kelly Gallagher, a native of Massachusetts, has worked in special education and applied behavior analysis for seven years. She started her career working in both school and residential settings for teenagers with severe challenging behavior in Massachusetts. Her most recent work was in Abu Dhabi, UAE as the lead teacher and BCBA in a classroom for children with autism spectrum disorder in a mainstream school.

Gallagher has experience conducting research on leisure skills as well as assessment and treatment of severe problem behavior. Her particular interests in the field include stimulus equivalence (i.e., making connections between untrained stimuli) and verbal behavior.

• Heather Brooks comes to TEC from Florida. She was introduced to the field of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) in 2020 after her oldest son was diagnosed with pervasive development disorder – not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). After witnessing firsthand, the difference ABA made in her son’s life, she decided she wanted to help other children and parents.

In 2012, Brooks began working as a behavior therapist at a private ABA clinic in Shreveport, Louisiana and became a BCBA in 2016. She has supervised eight candidates who passed their certification as either a BCaBA or BCBA. She has experience providing ABA services in center, home, private school, and community-based settings.

• Asim Javed is from Rochester. He has spent several years in service coordination, autism research, as well as direct behavioral interventions. Asim has learned from the late Dr. Tristram Smith from the University of Rochester and Dr. Justin Leaf at Autism Partnership Foundation in California. Currently, Asim is pursuing doctoral studies at Endicott College.
