Keystone Elementary School, Brookwood Elementary School and Armstrong Middle School in Bristol Township School District all earned state recognition for success in the School Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (SWPBIS) program. The schools were slated to accept the State Banner Awards at the PA Implementers Forum in Hershey, but will now participate in a virtual celebration on November 13.

SWPBIS is a universal, school-wide program that aims to establish a social culture within schools where students expect and support appropriate behavior from one another. “The SWPBIS model is very specific and geared towards helping our school become a safe and enjoyable place to learn,” said Melissa Schweiker, first grade teacher and SWPBIS building coach at Keystone Elementary School.

Keystone is being recognized for implementing Tier 1; Brookwood is being recognized for implementing Tiers 1 and 2; and Armstrong is being recognized for implementing Tiers 1, 2 and 3 for the 2019-2020 school year. Tier 1 is a school-wide program, which features a code of conduct, activities and assemblies to promote positive behavior. Tier 2 is for a smaller group of students with minor behavioral challenges. These students are provided with more instruction and support each day. Students in Tier 2 use the Check In- Check-Out Program (CICO) to check in with mentors at the beginning and end of each day, and the program and progress is monitored. Tier 3 continues to reteach behavior to students and provides more intensive interventions then Tier 2.

Armstrong Middle School follows the Armstrong R.O.C.K.S. expectations. Teachers and staff dedicate time in the beginning of the school year to “teach” students the expectations. Students are taught how to ROCK at Armstrong by being Respectful, Organized, Cooperative, Kind and Safe in all of the school’s common areas, in addition to digital citizenship. The vision behind Armstrong R.O.C.K.S. is that when students are taught to use social skills for themselves and others effectively, it creates a positive learning environment that is safe and respectful.

During the virtual learning in spring and fall, the R.O.C.K.S. team came together and created the expectations for learners at home, so students felt a sense of consistency. On October 16, Armstrong released the R.O.C.K.S. expectations for when the school moves into a hybrid model, and teachers are prepared to begin teaching the new expectations when the first group of students arrive.

When students follow the R.O.C.K.S. expectations, they earn tickets that can be traded for prizes at the R.O.C.K.S. store. Students who achieved a 4.0 are also acknowledged with a pancake breakfast prepared and cooked by teachers, cafeteria staff and administrators. Finally, at the culmination of each school year, one boy and one girl who consistently demonstrates what it looks like to ROCK at Armstrong receive an award at the 8th grade award ceremony.

Similar to the Armstrong R.O.C.K.S. expectations, Brookwood and Keystone Elementary Schools follow a Code of Conduct. This is recited by students daily after the morning announcements to remind students of the four tenants: “I am respectful. I am responsible. I am safe. I am prepared.”

“One of the major benefits is the consistency of language that staff use throughout the program – all students are learning the same behavior,” said Karen Madden, Title 1 Reading Specialist and Building Coach at Brookwood Elementary School.

Students are taught how to be respectful, responsible, safe and prepared in the classroom, cafeteria, hallway, playground, bathroom, all-purpose room and the bus. In the beginning of the school year, and again in January, students and teachers rotate through “stations” throughout the building.  At each station, the expectation is taught and practiced. Additionally, both schools have monthly SWPBIS assemblies that focus on a specific character trait and celebrate accomplishments such as students of the month. Students and staff have t-shirts with the code of conduct on them and the schools hold special themed dress up days. Ultimately, the framework is the same at Brookwood and Keystone, but the activities and rewards for students following the code of conduct vary.

At Brookwood, students earn Paw Tickets which can be redeemed for prizes and participation in special events. At Keystone, the Principal’s Pawsome 200 Club recognizes students daily who are following the Code of Conduct. When a student receives a special PAW ticket, he or she gets a chance to come to the PAW board. Each day, ticket holders are called to the board where they draw a numbered stick from a jar. This is the numbered square where their ticket will go. Their special PAW ticket is placed on the 200 Board for all to see. Students continue to work hard to earn a special ticket from the staff members. When a row of tickets is filled, similar to a BINGO, all students in the winning row are rewarded. A drawing is then held among those tickets to have a grand prize winner, who will have a special lunch with the principal.

“I am very proud of the success Brookwood, Keystone and Armstrong achieved through implementing the SWPBIS program,” said Superintendent Dr. Melanie Gehrens. “All of our schools have been working hard to model positive behavior for our students – even as we learn virtually – and students have been responding to the program extremely well.”
