A Connecticut man allegedly forced his stepson to sleep in a closet for months and made him guzzle hot sauce until he vomited — all while his wife did nothing to stop the ongoing abuse, police said.
Kevin Grant, 31, of Naugatuck, was arrested Friday on charges including second-degree assault, risk of injury to a child and intentional cruelty after detectives got a report of suspected child abuse about two weeks earlier, a department arrest log shows.
An investigation allegedly found Grant had forced his stepson “to sleep in a locked closet” for several months, police said.
Grant also allegedly doled out other sadistic punishments on the boy, including forcing him to kneel on tacks and to drink hot sauce until he threw up.
The boy’s age was not provided by police.
Grant’s wife, Kaitlin Elizabeth Baptiste, 29, was also arrested on charges including risk of injury to a child and second-degree reckless endangerment since “she was aware” that Grant was abusing the boy and did nothing to stop it, police allege.
Grant’s bond was set at $25,000 and he posted bail following his arraignment in Superior Court in Waterbury on Monday. He’s set to return to court on Nov. 10, according to court records cited by the Hartford Courant.
Baptiste was also released from custody after posting $10,000 bail and is due back in court on the same day, the Courant reported.
Attempts to reach the couple Wednesday were not successful. It’s unclear if they’ve hired attorneys who could speak on their behalf.
