Andy Cohen reveals the 'secret sauce' to 'The Real Housewives' success - Yahoo Finance

Andy Cohen has made a household name for himself thanks to, well, the housewives.

"This is a massive cultural phenomenon that has no shows no signs of letting up," Cohen said of the Bravo franchise, adding he never thought the series would become as prominent and popular as it is today.

"It's a testament to the hard work that we've all done trying to keep each franchise special and a great viewing experience for the fans," Cohen said.

Cohen, who has been developing and executive producing various iterations of the show since 2006, told Yahoo Finance the success is all tied to its leading ladies.

"The secret sauce of 'The Housewives' is all in the casting," Cohen said when asked how the franchise continues to remain relevant despite the shifting media landscape.

"I think we've done a lot of great work — finding the right women and then figuring out how to keep the energy going and taking people out of the mix and putting people back in and putting new people in."

"There's not a science to it, but [it's] a process that we all care very much about," he continued.

The television host and executive also noted the importance of the Bravo brand — and how 'The Real Housewives' franchise has been able to cultivate a brand of its own, alongside the network.

"The good news is we have a brand. I would argue that Bravo is one of the few brands in television or streaming that people actually care about," he said, citing the ultra-success of October's 3-day BravoCon extravaganza.

NBCUniversal (CMCSA) CEO Jeff Shell recently touted Bravo's relevance at a UBS investor conference on December 5.

The executive noted that Bravo content, like "The Real Housewives", has been a point of "strength" for Peacock, revealing the fledgling streaming service has more than 18 million total subscribers to date.

"The Bravo content is just amazing, and that's having a big impact. In some cases, bigger than the NBC content," Shell explained.

"[Bravo] a destination, it's a place they want to go," Cohen said.

"Bravo is a vibe that people love...and 'The Housewives' are a brand that people care about. It's all about creating the brand and sticking to it," Cohen said. In Cohen's view, the key to any successful business is knowing the brand inside and out, in addition to knowing the demand: "Is what you have something unique that no one else has?"

Looking ahead, Cohen, who is partnering with Amazon Devices for the holidays, is focused on a litany of other projects — in addition to "The Real Housewives."

Cohen told Yahoo Finance he's committed to growing his late night show "Watch What Happens Live" and recently signed a three-year contract extension with SiriusXM Radio (he says his dream guest would be Michelle Obama.)

The 54-year-old dad of two will also be co-hosting CNN's New Years Eve special alongside Andersen Cooper for the sixth year in a row.

Following an earlier report the network plans to have a "less boozy" New Years Eve telecast, Cohen said he's determined to keep the fun alive heading into 2023.

"I think part of the fun of New Year's Eve is watching me give Andersen shots," Cohen quipped.
