What’s Yankees’ secret sauce to comeback wins? Stay ‘opposite of emotional’ - NJ.com

NEW YORK — The Yankees really looked down and out Thursday night. They trailed 6-3 from the third inning until the ninth plaing a very good Houston Astros ballclub that’s one of their biggest rivals. They scored three in the first on a homer by Giancarlo Stanton after a walk and single, then had two baserunners over the next seven innings, the first on a walk and the next on an error.

You can’t win ‘em in all.

They won again.

This was a rise-from-the-dead ninth. Two walks and then a homer by Aaron Hicks tied it, then a hit, walk and game-winning liner into the left-field corner by Aaron Judge beat the Astros 7-6.

This made it 21 comeback wins and nine walk-offs for the Yankees, most in the majors in both counts.

How do they do it?

“We’ve got the MVP of the league so far in Aaron Judge, we’ve got a past MVP in Giancarlo Stanton and we’ve got a guy who won the World Series in Anthony Rizzo,” shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa said. “Just go down the lineup, everybody’s done something in their career. Everybody is big in big spots.”

Having experienced star players is a big reason the Yankees keep rallying for wins, of course. But those players having the right mindset while they’re down and trying to rally is important, too, so says their manager.

What was the mood in the Yankees’ dugout heading into the bottom of the ninth with Houston still up 6-3.

“Just a good level of focus on our bench,” Aaron Boone said. “Let’s go have good at-bats. That was the mindset, and so there was kind of a calm and a resolve, an energy certainly. But I’d say the opposite of emotional. It’s just like, ‘Let’s go grind this thing out and have good at bats.’”

Facing Astros closer Ryan Pressly, Stanton started a rally by working a leadoff walk, then Gleyber Torres did the same to bring the tying run to the plate.

“That really set us up, and then more tough at-bats,” Boone said.

With two on and nobody out, Hicks whacked a 1-2 fastball to right that was way gone for a game-tying homer.

Shellshocked, the Astros didn’t even get the game to extra innings. Jose Trevino singled with one out to chase Pressley. Ryne Stanek came on to strike out Joey Gallo for the second out, but DJ LeMahieu laid off a 3-2 pitch that was just off the corner to work a walk that put the winning run in scoring position for Judge. Stanek fell behind 3-0, threw a splitter over the heart of the plate and Judge hammered it to win the game.

Staying calm, or “opposite of emotional,” worked again.

“Yeah, we can see everybody’s faces when they’re in the (batter’s) box,” Judge said. “There was no emotion. There was some emotion when Hicks hit the game-tying home run in the ninth, but then it was right back to work. You saw guys up and down the lineup working at-bats, not letting the moment get too big.”

Whatever works.

“We really trust each other, we have that calm and we have the players to do it,” Kiner-Falefa said.

And …

“We don’t like to lose,” Hicks added. “We’re a team that’s going to keep fighting until the end. Until the last out is made, we believe that we have a chance.”
