Meredosia-Chambersburg school officials are worried about a rise in behavioral issues during the past few weeks.
Superintendent Thad Walker told school board members there has been fighting and disrespectful conduct. At one point, a hiding spot within a wall was discovered; it was being used for unspecified contraband.
Jeff Abel, principal for the junior high and high school, said there is a noticeable tension in the building.
It's an issue emerging in many school districts, Walker said. He believes the problem is a side effect of the lack of a structured educational environment during the pandemic. A seventh-grade student, for example, may have the behavioral mentality of a fifth-grader because that is when the student last was in a structured school setting, he said.
The result, he said, is that students are not coping well and the school is seeing education gaps. School faculty and administration are having to deal with loss of learning, social, emotional and behavioral growth in students, Abel said.
The school is turning to IL-Empower, a group that helps schools develop improvements through the use of human resources, finances and consultation. IL-Empower plans to speak to teachers about students' emotional and behavior maturity because of the pandemic. The group also is providing someone to work with students and staff to help with social and emotional support issues.
In other business, the school will buy a 14-passenger bus for about $66,000 and two new pieces of weight room equipment for $3,294.
