The first word that probably comes to mind is, "duh," however, a new study shows that some preschool children have been having behavioral issues as well as trouble with math after consuming sugary drinks.
Data was collected from a randomly selection of 462 children who were given sugary drinks or drinks with artificial sweeteners. Data was collected before and after consumption.
A "relaxing" effect took place in boys after one sugary drink before making them more restless. Behavior in girls was not significantly affected.
Additionally, the consumption of one sugary drink had a negative effect on student achievement in math for boys, and a positive effect for girls.
"The associated effects on in-class performance have major policy implications, as sugary drinks are still ubiquitously sold in schools and as the consumption of sugary drinks is typically higher among children from low-income households and among boys," Kristof De Witte, a professor at KU Leuven and study co-author, said.
