MADISON (WKOW) -- A woman caught on camera breaking the window of a State Street business during the first night of unrest in downtown Madison has now been arrested and some are saying her actions illustrate a bad trend seen at protests across the country.

While 27 News was broadcasting live on Saturday, May 30, a woman was smashing a storefront amid chaos that developed after a peaceful protest had ended.

Madison Police say that woman was 19-year-old Gabrielle Kokesh, who is now in Dane County Jail -- arrested for burglary and property damage.

Madison Police have arrested at least 42 people for looting since that day, but it was particular actions of demonstrators that night that took over social media immediately, with people outraged and saying white people were using a legitimate movement as a cover for destruction.

"Just completely undermining the purpose of the movement," said Maria, a UW student. "Black people will have to receive the consequences of those actions."

Maria was one of the people posting on social media. She retweeted a video of Kokesh and said in part, "demand an apology from them bc white ppl destroying (expletive) and ultimately harming black protesters in the process is not okay."

That tweet now has nearly 12,000 retweets and 23,000 likes.

"When I see non-black people being violent, destroying windows, starting fires, I think myself and a lot of other people agree that these people should be called out," she said. "Because they're putting the fellow black protesters around them in danger."

Maria says she's seen similar incidents across the country, which is why when she saw it happening where she goes to school, she felt the need to say something -- to refocus the narrative of what demonstrations should stand for.

"Non-black allies should not be going into the protest to be violent and destructive," she said. "I think they should be there to amplify black voices and protect them."

Records show Kokesh was still in jail as of Friday night and had not yet made an appearance in court.
